                EEO Academy returns for a second year with new courses such as Systemic Discrimination and African-American Men in the Workplace. EEO professionals, human resources officers, attorneys, mediators and other state employees responsible for implementing Equal Employment Opportunity laws are invited to participate in the second annual EEO Academy, which is offering 28 one-hour classes this fall.

                 Scanning service aids records conversion

                State agencies looking to reduce space taken up by paper files might want to consider asking the GSD Office of State Printing and Mail Services to scan the documents and save them electronically. This new service includes scanning paper files, indexing the files and providing the customer an electronic copy of the documents either on a CD or DVD or by transferring them directly to the customer’s data server for storage.

About 50 youths spent a full or partial day shadowing their relatives at work when DAS/OIT held Bring Your Child to Work Day on Aug. 4. The children, who ranged from 9 to 15 years old, tackled a variety of tasks.

                 New State Printing program cuts copying costs

                The Cost-Per-Copy Program offered by the Office of Printing and Mail Services is well on its way to becoming another State of Ohio cost savings program. Most users have cut their monthly copying costs, some by more than 50 percent, since the program began in March.

                 Cooperative Purchasing Program offers free membership

                A program that pools the buying power of state and local governments is offering free membership and simplified reporting through a pilot project to attract more members this fiscal year. DAS is waiving annual membership fees of $110 to $525 for the Cooperative Purchasing Program for any participant that submits accurate quarterly reports of the items it has purchased. The program also has streamlined reporting by giving members the new option of submitting information online.

                The State Architect’s Office recently published a new guide for members of the design and construction industry. The SAO Manual -- A Management Guide for Ohio Capital Improvements is available on the SAO Web site, www.ohio.gov/sao. It replaces the Design and Construction Handbook for Design Professionals, Construction Managers, Owners published in July 1994.

                The General Services Division continues to win for losing. By collectively losing 152 pounds, the GSD team won the third DAS Weight-Loss Competition. The GSD team also took the last weight-loss competition, which was held during the spring of 2004.

                State agencies will soon have another option to obtain copy equipment needs. Rather than purchasing or leasing copiers, agencies will be able to utilize copier equipment in a pay-as-you-go cost-per-copy basis. The Office of State Printing and Mail Services invites customers to attend an information session about this new cost-per-copy program.

                The Office of Fixed Asset Management recently changed its name to Asset Management Services to better reflect the breadth of services it provides. The office provides policies, support, training and systems to assist agencies with maintaining and reporting all assets, not just fixed assets.

                 State advisory work group highly satisfied with the process

                Participants surveyed said they were highly satisfied with the process of the Enterprise Desktop Hardware Standardization Initiative Advisory Work Group. The advisory work group, comprised of the staff from 24 agencies, boards and commissions, met from April through October to develop state desktop and laptop hardware standards and a standards revision process.

                Once again, the Investment and Governance Division of the Office of Information Technology has negotiated contracts for IT research and advisory services on behalf of state government.                 The DAS Office of Energy Services is among 12 honorees receiving the 2004 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Energy Efficiency. Presented Nov. 17, the award recognizes Energy Services for making improvements to the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky. Improvements were made to the heating, ventilating, air conditioning and lighting systems. Water conservation measures also were incorporated.

                Ohio’s Cooperative Purchasing Program has posted record enrollment for the first quarter of this fiscal year following its best year ever. The latest numbers show 1,304 local governments and school districts signing up in July, August and September compared to 1,713 new members for all of fiscal last year.

                 Interior Design works on 293 projects

                Interior Design Services, a section of the State Architect’s Office, participated in 293 projects during the biennium. Of these, 124 projects were in Ohio Building Authority buildings; 121 projects in DAS-owned and -operated buildings; 19 projects in Ohio Department of Transportation buildings; and 34 projects in commercial lease spaces.

                 State Mail Service saves more than 10 million
