                 EEO Academy to open
                EOD AA/EEO Unit, September 2007
                EEO Academy returns for a second year with new courses such as Systemic Discrimination and African-American Men in the Workplace. EEO professionals, human resources officers, attorneys, mediators and other state employees responsible for implementing Equal Employment Opportunity laws are invited to participate in the second annual EEO Academy, which is offering 28 one-hour classes this fall.

                 Armstrong, Austin capture Ohio Minority Business Advocacy Awards

                Two EOD employees received statewide recognition recently for their work as advocates for minority businesses. Cathy Armstrong and James Austin, both contract compliance officers for the EDGE (Encouraging Diversity, Growth and Equity) and MBE (Minority Business Enterprise) Certification Unit, each received Ohio Minority Business Advocacy Awards at the 2007 Ohio Business Opportunity Fair held recently in Cleveland.

                 Boards and Commissions Consolidation Transition Team submits recommendations

                The transition team assigned to make recommendations regarding the consolidation of 20 Ohio regulatory boards and commissions submitted its report to the governor, speaker of the House and president of the Senate as required in House Bill 66.

                 EEO Retreat to focus on equity practices

                "Best Practices for Implementing Equity in the 21st Century" is the theme of the Third Annual EEO Officers Retreat, which will be held May 19 and 20 at the Ohio Civil Rights Commission, 1111 E. Broad St., Columbus.

                 Commission holds MLK Oratorical Contest

                Citing examples of racial tolerance and non-violence, students from throughout Ohio shared their insights on the life and lessons of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the 2003 Statewide MLK Oratorical Contest.

                 DAS builds customer-focused Web site

                The DAS Web site was redesigned during fiscal year 2002 to better enable customers to find information. The customer-centric site, which is based on the State of Ohio Web portal, features multiple means of navigation.

                 EOD aids contract compliance conference

                 New program gives EDGE to underutilized businesses

                The Equal Opportunity Division and the Ohio School Facilities Commission linked computer systems to ensure construction compliance laws are followed on school construction projects

                At the request of the Youngstown Area Development Center and Youngstown Urban League, the EOD Construction Compliance Unit conducted equal employment opportunity monitoring training in March 2003.

                 MLK Commemorative Celebration slated

                The 19th annual Ohio Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Celebration will be held at noon Thursday, Jan. 15 at Trinity Episcopal Church, located at the southeast corner of Third and Broad streets in downtown Columbus.

                 EEO Retreat covers latest regulations

                Some 120 EEO officers from state agencies attended a two-day retreat, sponsored by the EOD Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action Office, to learn more about how recent U.S. Supreme Court rulings on the Americans with Disabilities Act will impact employees with physical and mental disabilities.

                 Investigations focus of EEO training

                The DAS Equal Opportunity Division is at work on a follow-up training to the EEO Officers Retreat held in February. The focus of this training opportunity, which is slated for the fall, will be investigative techniques, ethics and liability.
