                The Office of Collective Bargaining won their third consecutive agency wellness competition. They retained the Wellness Spoon Trophy by winning the DAS/OIT Biggest Loser Challenge, which was held January through March. The 14-member team lost the greatest percentage of weight –5.86 percent – among the six participating DAS/OIT divisions.

                Carol Nolan Drake was sworn into office as director of the Ohio Department of Administrative Services by Governor Bob Taft on Nov. 22 and confirmed by the Ohio Senate on Dec. 14.

                DAS and OIT employees once again showed their generosity during this year’s Holiday Food Basket Campaign. The 2005 campaign, which ended Nov. 30, was a huge success with DAS/OIT employees donating $5,184.75 and 4,310.5 pounds of food to the Mid-Ohio FoodBank, exceeding last year’s contributions by $1,085.90 and 1,705.50 pounds of food.

                A DAS employee raised his right hand on Nov. 15 and took the Oath of Allegiance, making him a U.S. citizen 12 years after emigrating from Ghana, Africa. Frank Wiredu celebrated his achievement during his recent naturalization ceremony in downtown Columbus surrounded by his wife, Grace, and his children, as well as DAS co-workers who had supported him through the lengthy naturalization process.

                Helping individuals who are living with a disability is Der Barber’s passion. Barber, who is visually impaired, uses primarily her left eye to see and credits her experiences living with a disability as an important aid as she serves on a governor’s council for disabled individuals.

                More than 20,000 miles was the distance that DAS employees walked during the recent DAS Inter-Divisional Walking Competition. The 198 employees participating in the four-week fall competition walked a total of 40,841,598 steps, which was the equivalent of walking about 20,420 miles.

                DAS and OIT employees contributed generously to support overseas U.S. troops during the holidays. One of the two campaigns resulted in phone cards and messages of appreciation sent to the 125 soldiers of the 660th Transportation Unit stationed in Camp Anaconda, Iraq, by DAS and OIT employees.

                Recent donations from DAS employees were a welcome comfort to Columbus area homeless individuals seeking a warm blanket. Take it to the Streets Foundation, an organization serving the Columbus homeless population, had run out of blankets a few days before a van pulled up carrying blankets donated by DAS employees as part of the department’s Make a Difference Day campaign.

                Eight DAS employees took a day of leave to do administrative tasks and other chores. These employees were part of more than 4,700 volunteers from 199 employers, including 33 state agencies, who fanned out throughout central Ohio to work at non-profit organizations for Community Care Day on Sept. 15.

                Making spreadsheets and imaging computers were all part of a day’s work for young visitors to DAS recently. About 80 youths spent a full or partial day working alongside their parent or another DAS employee in their life when DAS held Bring Your Child to Work Day on Aug. 5.
